ArmchairBEA: Aesthetic Concerns

Today is day 2 of ArmchairBEA

The Books: How often do you judge a book by its cover? How often are you surprised by what you find? Do you strategize and make sure every book in your series has the same cover design (as far as you are able to) and type? How important is it for the visual art on the outside of the book to match or coordinate with the literature art on the inside?

Do I judge a book by its cover? Well, I would love to say no, but if it has a pretty cover then I am more then likely to pick it up. Same goes for a cover that doesn’t look so nice. Even though I like pretty covers, I don’t go out of my way to make sure all my series are matching. Do I wish they matched? YES YES YES, but I get over it. My books don’t go on a pretty shelf for everyone to see, so if this was the case then my thoughts might be different. And I am not too concerned if the cover reflects the inside. Pretty covers are nice, but the story on the inside is what takes you to another world.

The Blog: As a book blogger, in whatever form that takes, branding is important. Your colors, your fonts, your style of review, all of these things come together to make the “brand” of your blog – something that makes your reviews and posts and websites, all your various content, immediately recognizable to the people looking for you. What do you do to create a brand on your site? Do you think about these things?

This question leads to a very short answer for me. I am fairly new at blogging and booktube so I haven’t started branding myself. I do think branding is important because it helps people recognize you. It’s like having a hot cup of comfort. I haven’t been thinking about this topic often, but I bet it will be something on my mind in the near future.

Do you have any suggestions/advice to help someone with branding? Let me know in the comments below if you have a way of going about it? If you did a post of this topic, leave a link in the comments so I can check it out.

  1. I do, but I’ve gotten a lot better about ignoring that first “nope not for me” reaction. Especially now since I often read summaries before seeing even a mock up of a cover for a book. I once had a chance to visit the Tor Books offices and on the wall they had posters of their classic titles onwards – I tend to really like Tor Books, so it was fascinating seeing that at one point they too followed the trends!

  2. My blog just had a major overhaul and I really love it. I think using some sort of logo is key for branding. It’s a lot of work but you’ll love a totally branded site with images you can use consistently.

  3. One of the reasons I read Kiera Cass’s The Selection series is because the fancy dresses on the covers kept catching my eye.

As for branding, I recommending thinking something that can carryover to all social media platforms so that you are recognizable every where.
